OzClo is a linguistics competition that provides a unique opportunity for students in Years 9 to 12 to engage in linguistic problem-solving, fostering skills in logical thinking and collaboration.”
The primary purpose of OzClo is to challenge students to develop their problem-solving strategies in the context of real languages. Participants are organised into teams of four, and together they tackle a 2-hour paper that presents various linguistic problems. One of the notable features of OzClo is that it does not require any prior knowledge of linguistics. This inclusivity allows students from various backgrounds to participate and learn, making it an accessible and enriching experience.
The activity takes place once per week at lunchtime during term 4 and term 1.
Major achievements, such as being named the Senior (Years 11/12) State Champion in 2023 and the Junior (Years 9/10) State Champion in 2022, showcase the success of participants in the competition. These accomplishments reflect the dedication, skills, and teamwork demonstrated by the St Leonard’s students involved in OzClo.
This worthwhile competition serves as a platform for students to delve into the fascinating world of linguistics, encouraging them to think critically. OzClo’s format, combined with its emphasis on logical thinking and teamwork, contributes to a valuable and intellectually stimulating experience for students in the specified year levels.
